Aimed at optimising and reducing environmental pollution across catchment water systems, Dr. Nascimento's research focuses on the impact of farming activities (crop and livestock) in terms of pollution of water sources and aquifers with N loads. Given the complexity of the agents involved and the uncertainty of the key variables in play, stochastics optimisation is applied in order to allow forecasting models and possibly enable trading of "N load permit" between farmers involved, in a feasible and environmentally friendly manner.
Furthemore, Dr. Nascimento investigates by means of stochastic optimisation, approaches to the petroleum drilling engineering discipline, and seeks for a more optimised and efficient operation, making Brazilian pre-salt fields closer of being economically viable. Given the complexity and uncertainty driven by drilling operations in pre-salt carbonate reservoirs, development of user-friendly computational tools capable of supporting operations in an efficient manner has its value. This is being developed in cooperation with the Department Petroleum Engineering from the Montanuniversität Leoben - Austria (DPE/MUL).
