MS Windows Systems Administrator

Vacancy 29/2017 - the MS Windows Systems Administrator is responsible for the provisioning, installation and configuration, operations and maintenance of all MS Windows servers,  hardware, software and related infrastructure. 


Reporting to the Head of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) department, the MS Windows Systems Administrator will be part of a two-person Windows Administration team within the larger team of IT support professionals. The successful candidate will be responsible for the provisioning, installation and configuration, operations and maintenance of all MS Windows servers,  hardware, software and related infrastructure supporting the IIASA staff of approximately 500 people.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform normal MS Windows Systems Administration functions to include the installation of servers, systems software and user software, configure server hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, and user account administration. 
  • Management of Microsoft services to include Office 365 and SharePoint.
  • Perform system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities, configure and add new services as necessary.
  • Engineering of Microsoft Windows-related solutions for various project and operational needs.
  • Provide first and second level help desk support and troubleshooting for all MS Windows hardware to include (but not limited to) servers, software, desktop and laptop computers.
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in MS Windows Systems administration, specifically with Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 R2 Systems.
  • Experience in Active Directory operation and management (user management, machine management, group policies, identity management, etc.).
  • Fluency in Exchange 2013/2016 operation and management (mailbox management and maintenance, security handling).
  • Experience administering/managing Microsoft Office 365.
  • Experience with Windows PowerShell scripting and programming.
  • Experience in virtual desktop environments (server farms, HA, thin clients).
  • Experience administering a SharePoint environment.
  • Knowledge of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
  • Knowledge of centralized managed environments.
  • MSCA or MSCE certifications advantageous.
  • Fluency in both spoken and written English required, fluency in German beneficial.

Appointment Terms:

The position is a full time role, based at IIASA's offices in Laxenburg. It is foreseen that following an initial trial period of three months, and with the agreement of both parties, the employment contract can be extended to become open ended. 

IIASA offers a competitive compensation and benefits package (moving and settlement allowances, educational grants for children of school age, and five weeks’ annual vacation). Additionally, IIASA salaries benefit from being exempt from income tax by the host country of Austria - subject to the principle of income aggregation. The gross salary offered for this position will be in the region of EUR 43,000 per annum (dependent upon the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate).
