Junior Researcher in Farm Economics

Vacancy 16/2014 -  In the context of our recently awarded ERC Grant IMBALANCE-P, IIASA's Ecosystems Services and Management Program is offering a junior research position in the field of Farm Economics. 


The research carried out by the Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program focuses on ecosystem management for provision of services related to fiber, food, water and bioenergy under global change. The team benefits from a pluridisciplinary research environment, where quantitative analysis plays a strong role in linking a wide spectrum of models, reaching from detailed process based biophysical models to global economic models. The Program is strongly connected to the international academic community, placing emphasis on transdisciplinary synergies and applied approaches. The work accomplished has long been recognized through regular publication in high-ranking scientific journals. In addition, the ESM Program has been invited to participate in numerous policy-oriented consultations and large scale scientific exercises.

The Position:

The successful candidate will work on developing and implementing a new costing module of farm level practices.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a costing module for major agricultural commodities along intensification gradients
  • Assist to help implement the module for spatial applications in combination with the IIASA crop model and the livestock model
  • Assist in implementing the module within the IIASA GLOBIOM model
  • Document the scientific progress by publications in peer reviewed articles
  • Produce a technical manual of the methodology.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Master in agricultural sciences and/or economics
  • Proven analytic skills and ease in manipulating data
  • Strong interest in ESM topics, in particular agriculture, forestry, water, land-use, risk management
  • Proficiency in programming
  • Fluency in English.

Appointment Terms:

The successful candidate will initially be offered a one-year contract with the possibility of extension thereafter.

IIASA offers a competitive compensation and benefits package including moving and settlement allowances. IIASA salaries are exempt from taxation in Austria, but subject to the principle of income aggregation.
