Pheakkdey’s project, which he started as part of IIASA’s Young Scientists Summer Program in 2012 working with the Ecosystems Services and Management Program, focuses on the science and policy of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) projects in Cambodia. It aims at understanding to what extent different groups of stakeholders in Cambodia consider REDD+ projects as salient, credible and/ or legitimate for addressing climate change, deforestation and sustainable livelihood development.

The award will fund a year of Pheakkdey’s field work in Cambodia and a year of dissertation writing at Clark University, where he is a PhD candidate.

Pheakkdey, originally from Cambodia, was a 2012 IIASA Annual Fund recipient, which supports participation in the program by exceptional students from developing countries. He says, “As a student from Cambodia, I do not think it would have been possible for me to be part of this superb program at IIASA without the support from the Annual Fund donors.”
