Demography’s role in Sustainable Development

In a letter to the editor of Science (24 Feb), several IIASA researchers and another 17 development experts outline how humans (population size, distribution, and characteristics) are central to sustainability.

In the Laxenburg Declaration, a document prepared for presentation at RIO+20, the experts outline five ‘human development’ issues that must be addressed urgently to achieve sustainable development.
