The two organizations have agreed to a new strategic partnership linking their research and educational programs. While the two institutions have a long history of working together, the new agreement lays the groundwork for more ambitious future collaboration, and a closer connection between IIASA and BOKU researchers.

IIASA Director and Chief Executive Officer Prof. Dr. Pavel Kabat and BOKU Rector Martin Gerzabek signed the agreement at IIASA on 29 May.

Gerzabek said, "Based on an already intensive scientific co-operation we expect a boost of joint activities through a closer link between IIASA and BOKU in the field of teaching and research. We have many scientific topics crucial for the development of the planet in common."

The new agreement establishes research partnerships in areas including food security, ecosystem services, forest management, climate change, biodiversity, and renewable energy. It also formalizes cooperation in education, allowing young IIASA scientists to join BOKU’s PhD program with the possibility of joint supervision by IIASA and BOKU investigators, and for students in IIASA’s YSSP program to be jointly advised by BOKU researchers. The two institutions also plan to increase their collaboration on funding proposals, and also to develop an annual summer school for policymakers.

IIASA Secretary Margaret Goud Collins and BOKU Center for International Relationships Leader Margarita Calderon-Peter will serve as coordinators of the new effort.
