China plays a leading role at IIASA, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has been a National Member Organization (NMO) since 2002. Kabat visited the NSFC to meet with their new President Professor Dr Yang Wei. They discussed the opportunity for China to take a greater role at IIASA, the possibility of establishing a Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) for the Asian region, and potential involvement in IIASA’s new flagship project Water Futures and Solutions: World Water Scenarios Initiative.

IIASA has run an YSSP scheme in Laxenburg, Austria, since 1977, and over 1500 participants from 84 countries have benefited from collaborating with IIASA scholars and enhanced their own perspectives and career opportunities. More recently IIASA, in cooperation with its South African NMO – the National Research Foundation, has just completed the first year of a South African version of the program, which was acclaimed as a great success by all involved.

While in China, Kabat also visited Tsinghua University in Beijing, and met with its President Professor Dr Chen Jining to discuss the practicalities of an Asian YSSP scheme and a potential IIASA School of Excellence. They discussed the development of Tsinghua University, in terms of personnel training, discipline construction, international exchanges and cooperation. IIASA and Tsinghua University intend to build on their existing relationship and strengthen corporation in the future, with a focus on the training of young scientists. In addition there are already strong connections in the fields of energy, environment and global change, and the intention is to develop further collaborations in these areas and in the fields of water and earth science.
