The one-day conference brought together experts, academics and practitioners to explore the latest developments in systems analysis and modelling, and discuss the opportunities and pitfalls of engaging decision makers with systems analysis. The conference was an opportunity to debate the policy areas to which systems analysis can be applied. Its aim was to stimulate research and collaboration on applying leading-edge modelling and systems approaches to issues of scientific and policy interest.

The conference concluded with a networking event to further discuss the opportunities of systems analysis, share good practice and to create and strengthen collaborations.

Following the welcoming address by Professor Alex Halliday, Vice President and Physical Secretary of the Royal Society, IIASA Director General and CEO Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat gave some opening remarks. He was joined by Professor Duncan Wingham, Chief Executive of NERC and IIASA Council Member for the United Kingdom. Kabat also participated in the last session of the conference on Opportunities for Integrated Assessment Model Research to discuss IIASA-UK Collaborations, and reflected on previous conference sessions.

The chairs and speakers that participated in the event were as follows:

Dr. Markus Amann (Program Director, Air Quality and Greenhouse Gases (AIR) Program,International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA))

Professor David Fowler (Environmental Physicist, Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Centre for Ecology and Hydrology)

Professor Nigel Gilbert (Director of the Centre for Research in Social Simulation, University of Surrey)

Professor Charles Godfray (Hope Professor of Entomology and Fellow of Jesus College, Department of Zoology, University of Oxford)

Professor Sarah Harper (Director of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, Oxford University)

Professor Wolfgang Lutz (Program Director, World Population (POP) Program, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA))

Dr. Michael Obersteiner (Program Director, Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA))

Dr. Narasimha Rao (Project Leader, Energy (ENE) Program, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA))

The United Kingdom and IIASA

Since 2006, IIASA researchers have collaborated with 57 research partners in the UK including the Government Office for Science, the Met Office and Oxford University. These research collaborations have ranged from enhancing UK expertise in developing and applying integrated assessment models to analyzing how to feed a future global population of 9 billion. These activities have also resulted in over 180 peer-reviewed publications. The United Kingdom joined IIASA in 2015 as its 22nd member country.
