The President of VAST was introduced to IIASA, its work and activities with Vietnam when he made an official visit to IIASA on 25 November 2016. Vietnam has been a member of IIASA since 2013 through the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST).
During the visit, Minh and Kabat signed an agreement to further strengthen cooperation between IIASA and Vietnam for 2016-18 in the following areas:
Professor Academician Chau Van Minh, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and IIASA Director General and CEO Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat exchange the memorandum of understanding.
Minh was accompanied by Professor Ninh Khac Ban (General Director of International Collaboration Department, VAST and the Vietnamese Council Member for IIASA), Professor Pham Anh Tuan (Director of Vietnam National Satellite Center, VAST), and Mr. Le Sy Tung (Chief, Administration Department, VAST).
At the meeting Kabat was joined by Chin-min Lee, Special Advisor to the IIASA Director General and CEO, Kim Montgomery, IIASA International Relations Officer, and Iain Stewart, IIASA Head of External Relations, Communications, and Library.

Vietnam joined IIASA in 2013 with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) representing Vietnam’s scholarly community as the IIASA National Member Organization. Recently IIASA researchers have explored developing climate-resilient agricultural systems in Vietnam and Southeast Asia; provided input to the development of Vietnam’s national policy to tackle air pollution; and calculated projections for Vietnam’s future population and human capital. Three doctoral students from Vietnam have developed their international and interdisciplinary research skills by taking part in IIASA’s Young Scientists Summer Program since 2011.
However, there is significant potential to strengthen collaboration to benefit both Vietnam and IIASA. Activities could include joint IIASA-Vietnamese research in areas ranging from air pollution to tropical deforestation to integrated water management along with joint academic training opportunities for young Vietnamese scientists.
