Welcome from IIASA Director & CEO Prof. Pavel Kabat

As we run up to the IIASA conference at the end of October, many at IIASA are working tirelessly to ensure that the event will be a success. Many IIASA researchers will speak at the conference, along with dignitaries and eminent scientists, policymakers, and experts from around the world.

While we are all focused on the upcoming conference IIASA also has much to celebrate in recent months. In a few days, the Institute will celebrate its 40th birthday. Since our founding in 1972, IIASA has evolved from an East-West Institute into a truly international research center of excellence. During the past 2 months, IIASA gained 2 new member countries, bringing the total to 20. In August, Indonesia joined, strengthening the Institute’s ties with the South Pacific. In September, the IIASA council approved Australia as a new member. CSIRO will serve as the Australian National Member Organization, and the new partnership will be announced later in October.

Meanwhile IIASA scientists continue to publish important work, participate in high-level policy advisory work, and gain new funding for future work. You can read more about these successes in the pages that follow.
