The forum is organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)  with the aim to further expand partnerships and scale up investment for inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID).

“To further support its renewed mandate, UNIDO has planned to convene two global forums this year. During the first one, held in June, Member States engaged in a strategic dialogue on how to formulate and operationalize inclusive and sustainable industrial development strategies and policies. That event also addressed the development of state-of-the-art business infrastructure and industrial parks in particular,” said UNIDO Director General LI Yong.

The second global forum will aim to pilot the establishment of innovative partnership-based business models to implement strategies for inclusive and sustainable industrial development.

The forum will begin with opening addresses by UN Secreatry-General Ban Ki-moon and UNIDO Director General LI Yong, who recently met with Kabat to discuss strengthening ongoing collaborations between UNIDO and IIASA.

Kabat will also participate in the closing sessions of the forum to discuss how dialogue between UNIDO, governments, development agencies, the private sector and donors can be strengthened to scale up ISID investment in developing countries.

UNIDO is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. It aspires to reduce poverty through inclusive and sustainable industrial development. All countries should have the opportunity to grow a flourishing productive sector, to increase their participation in international trade and to safeguard their environment.

Inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) means that:

  1. Every country achieves a higher level of industrialization in their economies, and benefits from the globalization of markets for industrial goods and services.
  2. No one is left behind in benefiting from industrial growth, and prosperity is shared among women and men in all countries.
  3. Broader economic and social growth is supported within an environmentally sustainable framework.
  4. Unique knowledge and resources are combined of all relevant development actors to maximize the development impact of ISID.
