As part of IIASA's strategic plan for 2011-2020, the Institute and its governing council established new procedures to evaluate the progress and quality of IIASA’s current research. As part of this process, periodic external reviews are being undertaken of each research program within the Institute.
In 2013, the first round of evaluations took place for the Mitigation of Air Pollution and Greenhouse Gases, Energy, and Transitions to New Technologies programs. The second round of program evaluations now begins with World Population, Evolution and Ecology, and Ecosystems Service and Management programs.
The evaluation committee consists of leaders in their fields of expertise, with internationally recognized intellectual standing, drawn from an international and interdisciplinary cross-section of top academics. They will assess each program's goals and achievements, with respect to the IIASA strategic plan, and policy impact. Finally they will assess the program's research plans and strategy for the next five years.
