IRC Terms of Reference

IIASA’s Internal Research Committee (IRC) works with and advises the Director and Deputy Director on scientific topics, research planning and coordination, and related issues (Council Resolution 528). Specifically, the IRC

works with and advises the Director and Deputy Director on:

  • the effective implementation of IIASA’s research plan,
  • new research directions,
  • new approaches to enhancing interdisciplinary research at IIASA,
  • the presentation of IIASA’s research achievements to the outside world;

coordinates and advises the Director and Deputy Director on:

  • scientific cross-area and cross-program dialogue and cooperation,
  • collaboration of IIASA’s research programs with scientists from National Member Organizations (NMOs),
  • scientific input to IIASA’s activities in capacity building and academic training (CBAT);

is responsible for, subject to final approval by the Director and Deputy Director:

  • the scientific content presented on IIASA’s website, especially content describing cross-area and cross-program research,
  • the scientific content of IIASA’s annual Progress Report,
  • the scientific content of IIASA’s Annual Report,
  • the scientific content of the Options magazine;

evaluates and proposes, for final approval by the Director and Deputy Director:

  • candidates for IIASA’s Postdoctoral Programs,
  • candidates for IIASA’s Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP);

develops, in collaboration with and for final approval by the Director, Deputy Director, and the IIASA Council:

  • IIASA publication policies,
  • proposals for cross-area IIASA flagship projects,
  • scientific programming and research guidelines for the YSSP, in cooperation with the YSSP Team,
  • options for enhanced CBAT activities, in cooperation with the CBAT Team;

monitors and advises the Director and Deputy Director on:

  • emerging strategic and organizational issues for the enhancement of scientific excellence;

compiles and advises the Director and Deputy Director on:

  • harmonized research needs on IIASA’s infrastructure and support services,
  • performance criteria for scientific staff, Programs and research areas;

organizes, with approval of the Director and Deputy Director:

  • institute-wide seminars to enhance interdisciplinary scientific exchange,
  • training sessions for scientific staff (on presentation techniques, scientific writing, good scientific practice, etc.);

participates

  • in the evaluation of candidates for key IIASA positions.
