The Arctic Council is a high-level intergovernmental forum established by the Ottawa Declaration on 1996 to promote cooperation, coordination, and interaction among the Arctic States.
The Council works with the involvement of the Arctic Indigenous communities and other Arctic inhabitants on common Arctic issues, in particular issues of sustainable development and environmental protection in the Arctic.
There are 8 members states, all of which have territory in the Arctic (marked dark blue on map).
