IIASA and China

A delegation from IIASA visited Beijing from 21 to 25 March 2016 to enhance current collaborations with academia and policymakers in China.

Research collaborations between IIASA and China have been highly productive since China became a national member of IIASA in 2002 through the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). In the last eight years, IIASA has worked with 37 Chinese research partners to bring international system analytical expertise to Chinese agricultural policy, demography, energy scenarios, air pollution, and risk mitigation among others. This has resulted in over 300 peer-reviewed publications and the development of international and interdisciplinary research skills among over 65 young Chinese scientists.

Building on this base, IIASA Director General and CEO, Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat lead a IIASA delegation to China this March to further enhance collaborations. High-level meetings took place with:

Peking University Workshop

A workshop with Peking University was held on 22 March to develop additional collaborations and connections between researchers at the University and IIASA. The workshop’s program included:

  • Welcome speech by Jie Wang, Vice President, Peking University and former IIASA Council Member for China
  • Public Lecture on ‘Principles and Benefits of Systems Science: Can we reconcile economic development with environmental sustainability?’ by Pavel Kabat, Director General and CEO, IIASA  at 10:30 in the Moonlight Hall, Peking University Overseas Exchange Center.

‘Integrated scenario development & modelling of the water-food-energy nexus in Asia & the Pacific’ by Guenther Fisher, Senior Research Scholar, Water Program as part of the workshop with Peking University's School of Advanced Agricultural Sciences.

‘Human capital formation and economic development in Asia’ by Samir KC, Research Scholar, World Population Program as part of the workshop with Peking University's Institute of Social Science Survey.

‘Systemic risk, resilience, and critical transitions to networked systems’ by Matthias Wildemeersch, Postdoctoral Scholar, Advanced Systems Analysis Program as part of the workshop with Peking University's College of Urban and Environmental Sciences.
