The GEF-IIASA-UNIDO Partnership on Integrated Solutions for Water, Energy, and Land, launched earlier this year, will focus on the food-water-energy nexus in the context of other major global challenges such as urbanization, environmental pressure and equitable and sustainable futures. It will develop a consistent framework for looking at the nexus and identify strategies and approaches for achieving the needed transformational outcomes, through advanced modeling framework focusing on the water-energy-land nexus. The nexus is characterized both through trade-offs as well as multiple-benefits.
The meeting at IIASA is the first scoping meeting related to the partnership, and will focus on defining the goals and research plan for the coming years. Participants will include GEF Chair Naoko Ishii, UNIDO Energy Branch Director Pradeep Monga, as well as other luminaries in the fields of sustainable development and holistic systems analysis research.
The Global Environment Facility is a partnership for international cooperation where 183 countries work together with international institutions, civil society organizations and the private sector, to address global environmental issues. Since 1991, the GEF has provided $13.5 billion in grants and leveraged $65 billion in co-financing for 3,900 projects in more than 165 developing countries. For 23 years, developed and developing countries alike have provided these funds to support activities related to biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, and chemicals and waste in the context of development projects and programs. Through its Small Grants Programme (SGP) the GEF has made more than 20,000 grants to civil society and community based organizations for a total of $1 billion.
