IIASA Director General and CEO Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat and IIASA Deputy Director General Nebojsa Nakicenovic are founding members of the Earth League, an alliance composed of leading scientists and institutions who deal with planetary processes and sustainability.

Workshop details
The timing of this workshop is critical, in the final lead up to COP 21. The workshop will include a “High-level Dialogue on the Road to Paris”, where Earth League members, along with a broad group of high-level Chinese invitees, including policy makers, business members and scientists, will discuss key aspects of climate science and cooperation in the lead up to Paris and beyond. The Earth Statement will also be introduced by Johan Rockstrom and Prof Xu to the Chinese participants. Furthermore, this workshop will see the first meeting of the Earth-Docs, who will be leading the Whole-Earth Systems programme, to craft a new fully integrated science where biophysics meets human dimensions within a changing climate.

THE EARTH LEAGUE

This international group of prominent scientists from world‐class research institutions will work together to respond to some of the most pressing issues faced by humankind, as a consequence of climate change, depletion of natural resources, land degradation and water scarcity. The group will consider the options for wider use of climate-compatible energy sources; increased and sustainable world food production; and novel approaches to urban planning. The alliance will focus on how we can manage anthropogenic global change according to the principles of sustainable development. The Earth League aims to provide decision makers with multiple options for addressing pressing sustainability issues, by delivering robust background information and enhancing transparency of the choices available. By coming together in a self-organized alliance, the Earth League members will be a united voice in the global dialogue on planetary issues. The members of the Earth League will meet on an annual basis.
