Henry H. Arnhold 1921-2018

It is with great sadness that IIASA announces the passing of Henry H. Arnhold, a major supporter of the Peter E. de Jánosi Fellowship, who died at home on 23 August.

Mr. Arnhold was born into a distinguished Jewish banking family in Dresden, Germany in 1921. He fled Europe during the rise of Nazism and arrived in the United States in 1942. After a brief period of study at UCLA and three years’ service in the US Army, he entered the family business in New York, the investment bank Arnhold & S. Bleichroeder, where he served as chairman starting in 1960.

Some of the positions he held during his lustrous career include Director at First Eagle Investment Management, LLC, President at the Arnhold and Mulago Foundations, Director and Member of the Executive Committee of Conservation International, and a Member of the Board of Trustees and several committees, including the Executive Committee of the New School University.

In addition to his vast philanthropic work, significant art collections, and commitment to scholarship and to cooperation between US and German educational and cultural institutions, Mr. Arnhold will long be remembered as a warm, generous, open-minded, and sharp-witted friend and colleague.

“We have dear memories of visiting Henry in his New York premises and have always admired his wisdom, generosity, and kindness,” said Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat, IIASA Director General and CEO.

Mr. Arnhold and his family made a very generous contribution to IIASA in 2015 to support the endowment of a postdoctoral fellowship program honoring the former IIASA director and Henry’s brother-in-law, Peter E. de Jánosi. Henry was proud to support IIASA’s research and honored to show his appreciation for Peter’s contributions to the cause of improved international relations and global environmental conservation.

The photo below marks Henry's meeting with the second recipient of the Peter E. de Jánosi Fellowship, Dr. Alison Heslin, the President of the U.S.-based Friends of IIASA, Dr. Roger Levien and Peter E. de Jánosi's wife, Monica.
