IIASA researchers win Thesis Awards

IIASA junior researchers Johan Lilliestam and Kerstin Damerau, both of the Risk Policy and Vulnerability Program, won awards for their papers on security and water issues related to solar power at the recent Desert Energy Conference in Cairo, Egypt.
Lilliestam won the 1st European Award for his paper, co-authored with a Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research colleague, on the possibility of North African countries using solar-generated electricity as a political weapon. Damerau won the 2nd European Award for her paper on scenarios for reducingwater use in concentrating solar power. Her paper was done in collaboration with a researcher from South Africa’s Stellenbosch University. The winning papers were selected from more than 50 submissions.
