Worlds Within Reach: Conference registration now open

The IIASA Worlds Within Reach: From Science to Policy Conference will analyze sustainability and development challenges.

Laxenburg, Austria, 27 June 2012 –A prestigious line up of scientists, academics, policy advisors, and heads of government will attend the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Conference, Worlds Within Reach – From Science to Policy, in Vienna, from 24-26th October 2012.

IIASA’s 40th Anniversary Conference, which is expected to attract in excess of 800 delegates, will examine the many sustainability and development challenges posed by increasing globalisation, fundamental shifts in economic and political power, escalating environmental challenges, and social conflicts. Key global issues of energy and climate change, food and water, and poverty and equity will be particular focus of the conference.

Leading scientists and experts from a diverse range of disciplines, regions, and institutions will present findings and perspectives which aim to generate debate and further analyses and help to identify viable pathways through these complex and interlinked global challenges. The Conference will reinforce the relevance and application of advanced systems analysis and integrated approaches in providing science-based solutions for policymakers faced with these pervasive problems.

The IIASA 40th Anniversary Conference will take place over three days: the first two days at the Hofburg Congress Center, Vienna, and the third day at IIASA, Laxenburg.

IIASA scientists will feature strongly in the program. Other prominent speakers include:

  • Prof Paul Crutzen:Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Germany, and Nobel Prize Recipient
  • Dr Rajendra K. Pachauri: Chair, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
  • Prof Lidia Brito: Director, Division of Science Policy and Sustainable Development, UNESCO
  • Prof Dr. Yuan-Tseh Lee: President of the International Council for Science
  • Mr Kandeh K. Yumkella: Director-General UNIDO
  • Ms Yolanda Kakabadse: President, WWF International
