Fabian Wagner

Fabian Wagner is a Senior Research Scholar in the Mitigation of Air pollution & Greenhouse gases (MAG) Program. Between 2006 and 2010 he was Scientific Coordinator and Co-Leader of IIASA's Greenhouse Gas Initiative (GGI), a large scale cross-program research activity with the aim to better understand the challenges of climate change.

Dr. Wagner's expertise ranges from integrated assessment modeling covering energy, socio-economic, biophysical and chemical dimensions, to the economics of climate change mitigation and co-benefit analysis. He has developed the optimization modules of the GAINS/RAINS model family, which have been used in a number of policy applications in Europe and Asia for designing clean air and greenhouse gas mitigation policies. For the development of the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National GHG Inventories, he has served as a Lead Author (Energy) and Contributing Author (Waste). He is also co-editor of the IPCC Good Practice Guidance on Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry. His current research interests also include decision theory, risk and uncertainty, renewable energy and short-lived climate forcers.

Before joining IIASA in 2004, Dr. Wagner was a researcher at the IPCC National Greenhouse Gas Inventories Programme located at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Hayama, Japan. From 2001-2002 he was a post doc with the International Energy Analysis Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), California, before moving to the International Climate Policy group at the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWA), Germany, as a guest researcher. Since 2001 he has repeatedly consulted for the UNFCCC secretariat in Bonn on methods, inventories and emission projections, as well as comparisons of post-Kyoto pledges under the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Kyoto Protocol.

Dr. Wagner received both his PhD (theoretical physics) and two master's degrees (mathematics, history and philosophy of science) from Cambridge University (UK), where he also completed a diploma course in Russian. His undergraduate years (physics) were spent at Goettingen University in Germany.

Dr. Wagner has been the recipient of numerous personal research grants and scholarships including a five-year grant by the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German National Merit Foundation), two distinct DAAD fellowships (German Academic Exchange Service), a PhD scholarship and a senior scholarship awarded by Trinity College (Cambridge), a three-year grant by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and an award by the Cambridge European Trust.

In 1998 he received the J.T. Knight's Prize in mathematics from the University of Cambridge.

His past PhD students in the YSSP include Eri Saikawa (Princeton, now MIT), Zoe Chafe (UC Berkeley), Regina Clewlow (MIT), Jarkko Niemi (Univ. Helsinki), Michiel Hekkenberg (now ECN), Win Trivitayanurak (Thailand), and Stefan Aström (Sweden, now IVL).
