Anna Timonina graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (State University) with a specialization in applied mathematics and physics. During the course of her studies in Moscow, she pursued research in the field of systems analysis at the Institute for Control Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences that brought her scientific interests to the topics of stochastic optimization and approximation, and adaptive and robust systems.
From 2009 to 2010, Ms. Timonina participated in the cooperative educational program in financial economics of the Higher School of Economics (Russia) and the London School of Economics, where she broadened her interests in the fields of investments, insurance, risk-management, and behavior economics.
Ms. Timonina currently conducts the research devoted to Insurance for Adaptation with the Risk, Policy and Vulnerability (RPV) Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and is a research assistant and a lecturer at the University of Vienna (Austria). Her research focuses on efficiency and equity of available and alternative strategies and options for transferring disaster risk in Austria and Europe, as well as on examining their link with risk reduction and adaptation. Ms. Timonina’s PhD dissertation that she is writing at the Department for Statistics and Operations Research at the University of Vienna is devoted to multi-stage stochastic optimization and approximation with applications.
Her specific interests include the development of strategies for risk-management of catastrophic events; the impacts of natural hazards and climate change on societies and their environments; as well as insurance and investment governmental strategies in the multi-period environment. During summer 2011, she was a participant of IIASA’s Young Scientists Summer Program, where she was granted the Mikhalevich Award 2011 for the quality of her research that was devoted to Optimal Strategies for Risk-Management of Catastrophic Events. Ms. Timonina has several publications in the areas of her expertise and has presented her work at international conferences (for example, CMS 2012 in London, IFAC 2011 in Milano, and several conferences in Russia).
