IIASA Alumnus Evolution and Ecology
Elena Shchekinova joined IIASA in 2016. She is working on the crosscutting project “Systemic Risk and Network Dynamics (SRND)”, being developed jointly with the Advanced Systems Analysis (ASA), Evolution and Ecology (EEP) and Risk and Resilience (RISK) programs. Dr. Shchekinova's work focuses on developing pattern recognition methods for the early prediction of economic recessions from available financial and economic indicators.
Dr. Shchekinova uses a state of the art algorithm developed at IIASA, which is based on machine learning technique. The method allows anticipation of phenomena such as economic recessions, based on readouts from major available economic indicators and provides a prediction of future recession events.
Before joining IIASA, Dr. Shchekinova worked at the Center for Mediterranean Climate Change and developed a decision support system for computer-assisted search and rescue in the Mediterranean Sea (http://www.ocean-sar.com), based on high-resolution ocean and atmospheric models for the same area.
Her scientific expertise also covers time series analysis for climate and atmospheric data, models of population dynamics in ecology and agent-based models for multi-cellular biological systems.
