Sergei Scherbov is a Senior Research Scholar with the World Population Program (POP) at IIASA and Leader of the Population Dynamics and Forecasting Group at the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID).
Dr. Scherbov graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute and received his PhD in theory of systems, control theory and systems analysis from the Research Institute for Systems Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
In 1982 Dr. Scherbov participated in the Young Scientists Summer Program and has been a frequent collaborator with the Population Program since then. He joined POP in June 1987 to work on the issues of population projections and development of software for population studies. From 1993-2002, Dr. Scherbov was a researcher and lecturer at the Population Research Centre, University of Groningen. During that period he continued his close collaboration with IIASA’s Population Program. He returned to IIASA in 2002 to work on issues related to demographic modeling.
His research interests are in probabilistic population projections, demographic modeling, demographic software and data processing, measuring aging in ways that take life expectancy change into account, and modeling of disability. He has done much research on the demography of the former Soviet Union. Dr. Scherbov is author, co-author, or co-editor of several books as well as numerous articles published in professional journals, including Nature, Science, and Population and Development Review.
