Stefan Hochrainer-Stigler

Stefan Hochrainer has been a Research Scholar with the Risk and Vulnerability Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and a Lecturer at the University of Vienna since 2006. He studied statistics with a focus on mathematical statistics at the Department of Statistics and Decision Support Systems and Sociology, empirical branch, at the Department of Sociology, University of Vienna. In 2006 he received his PhD in risk management against extreme events from the Department of Statistics and Decision Support Systems. He was a Research Assistant and Lecturer at the same department from 2004 until 2006.

Dr. Hochrainer’s main research interests include risk management of extreme events such as natural disasters in developing countries, statistical (stochastic) modeling of rare events, extreme value theory and econometrics as well as multivariate analysis. He has published widely in peer reviewed journals and book chapters. Furthermore, he has been invited to and has held presentations at several major scientific conferences and (re)insurance meetings as well as contributing and facilitating workshops as a consultant in a number of Caribbean countries, Madagascar, Turkey, The Philippines, India, and Mexico.
