Marianne Hall first came to the IIASA Forestry (FOR) Program in 2007 as a participant in the Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP). In 2009 she rejoined the Program as a part time guest Postdoctoral Research Scholar, and returned in 2011 as a full time guest Research Scholar with IIASA’s new Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program.
Dr. Hall received her PhD in environmental science at Gothenburg University (Sweden) in 2008. She then took up a position as a Research Assistant at the School of the Environment and Society, Swansea University (UK), working with the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES). Her research interest is focused on forest ecosystems, and how they will respond to the changing climate as a result of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Global change, i.e. changes in land use and climatic changes including increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, increasing air and soil temperatures, changing precipitation patterns and changing nitrogen and phosphorus availability, can be expected to severely alter how forests are affected by and in turn by themselves affect their surroundings on local, regional and global scales. Plants mainly interact with their surroundings by radiation interception and uptake and release of CO2 and water vapour, both latter processes capable of altering the atmospheric concentrations of these two compounds on local as well as global spatial scales. By measuring and modelling plant – atmosphere gas exchange as well as by modelling regional land surface processes, in particular CO2, water and energy exchange between atmosphere and vegetation, these effects can be quantified and their relative effects on the climate can be assessed. At IIASA, Dr Hall will be involved in the development of a new plant-atmosphere interaction model, using the plant function optimisation approach.
