Tutorial workshop on the GAINS model
Joint workshop of the EMEP Centre for Integrated Assessment Modelling (CIAM) and the Swedish Institute for Environmental Research (IVL)

23-25 February 2009
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Laxenburg, Austria

Aim of the workshop

The workshop will offer insight into the methodology and practical hands-on experience to users of IIASA’s GAINS (Greenhouse gas – Air pollution Interactions and Synergies) model. The primary audience includes national experts who analyze and process data for the whole air pollution cycle, especially in Eastern European, Central Asian and Caucasian (EECCA) countries that are included in the current version of the GAINS model. Presentations will be in English, and translation into Russian will be provided.

Presentations and training will introduce the GAINS methodology of calculating emissions of air pollutants, costs of emission control strategies, and the resulting environmental impacts. The principles of searching for cost-efficient emission ceilings, as used in the review of the 1999 Gothenburg Protocol of the LRTAP Convention and within the proposed revision of the National Emission Ceilings Directive of the European Union, will be presented.

General information

The workshop is organized under the auspices of the LRTAP Convention by the EMEP Centre for Integrated Assessment Modelling (CIAM) at IIASA, in close cooperation with the Swedish Institute for Environmental Research (IVL).

Due to space and computer hardware limitations, the number of participants will be confined to 20. Priority will be given to participants from EECCA countries, especially to those that are involved in the IVL project. Participants from other countries will be accepted based on available space.

There is no registration fee, but participants are expected to cover their travel and accommodation expenses. For participants of the IVL project costs will be covered by the project funds. Participants are asked to bring their own notebook computers.

Due to limited space, it is necessary to apply for admission to the workshop (deadline February 3, 2009; use attached application form). If required, CIAM will organize a follow-up workshop for participants from non-EECCA countries later in 2009.
