Assessing the impact of nitrogen flows on crops and the environment
A new study by an international research team and led by IIASA and Beijing Forestry University shows that about 80 percent of African countries are confronted with nitrogen (N) stress or scarcity, which, along with poverty, causes food insecurity and malnutrition. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the study also indicates that globally, two-fifths of N used in agriculture is lost to ecosystems, with deleterious environmental effects.

UN report urges universal access to modern energy by 2030
The UN Secretary General’s Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change (AGECC) have delivered their landmark report, Energy for a Sustainable Future. Launched in Vienna on 19 May by the Austrian Minister for European and International Affairs Michael Spindelegger and Chair of UN-Energy and the AGECC, UNIDO DG Kandeh Yumkella, the report calls for universal energy access and a 40% reduction in global energy intensity by 2030, to meet climate change targets and other UN development goals. The Group, which includes IIASA’s Nebojsa Nakicenovic, will work with UN-Energy to implement the report’s recommendations over the coming year.

Workshop in Land Use Planning and Agriculture
IIASA, TIFAC and the MSE hosted a capacity building workshop on Land Use Planning and Agriculture, in Chennai, India in April. IIASA staff hosted a series of lectures on: an integrated modeling framework for ecological-economic analysis of food and agriculture development; the FAO-IIASA AEZ system for spatial analysis of food and energy crop land use options; and examples of spatially detailed assessments of national strategies for agricultural development.

The impact of population change on carbon emissions
Former leader of IIASA’s Population and Climate Change research Dr. Brian O’Neill speaks about the research currently underway on the relationship between population growth and decline, urbanization and aging, and energy use and emissions of greenhouse gases. The research, carried out by O’Neill, now with the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and colleagues at IIASA and NOAA, provides a foundation for evaluating potential policy responses to climate change.

IIASA welcomes young scientists to summer research program
Fifty-one young scientists from 21 countries have commenced IIASA’s annual Young Scientists Summer Program. The 3-month program, which runs over the European summer, offers participants the opportunity to advance their own research by working and interacting with IIASA researchers in an international and interdisciplinary environment.

Land use researcher receives UK academic honor
Professor Laixiang Sun, IIASA research scholar and professor at the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London, has been awarded the title Academician of the (UK) Academy of Social Sciences on 5 March 2010, for his contribution to the social sciences. Professor Sun is the first researcher from Mainland China to receive this honor.

IIASA awards scholarships to outstanding young scientists
Each year IIASA honors exceptional performance of participants in its Young Scientists Summer Program. Following a rigorous selection process Zachary Brown (Duke University, USA) and Gregor Kiesewetter (University of Bremen, Germany) have received the 2009 Peccei Award. University of Vienna Ph.D. candidate Christian Hilbe received the Mikhalevich Award for his novel approach to evolutionary game theory. The awards provide financial support to recipients, enabling them to return to IIASA for an additional three-months of research and mentoring. More.

Engaging with the Global Energy Assessment
In recent months the Global Energy Assessment (GEA), a multi-year, global study hosted at IIASA and led by a multinational team, has been conducting stakeholder consultations - most recently with senior representatives from industry, government and regulatory agencies in the United States (Washington), India (Mumbai and New Delhi ), and China (Beijing). The meetings, designed to inform key stakeholders of progress and to elicit their feedback on the GEA, will continue in the second half of 2010, with meetings planned in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The GEA is due to release its final analysis in early 2011. More.

Climate Change – Looking Beyond Copenhagen
Approximately 100 people attended an open and lively discussion on climate change research in a post-Copenhagen environment, in Vienna, 17 May. Hosted by the Society for International Development, the Foreign Policy and United Nations Association of Austria, and IIASA, the event, featuring IIASA’s Joanne Linnerooth-Bayer, Florian Kraxner, and Fabian Wagner included presentations on recent findings and general commentary on climate research in the areas of mitigation and adaptation, and modeling of possible responses to climate change.

International workshop on Uncertainty in Greenhouse Gas Inventories: 22–24 Sep
IIASA is a co-organizer of the 3rd International Workshop on Uncertainty in Greenhouse Gas Inventories, to be held in Lviv, Ukraine in September. Special attention will be given to translating scientists' understanding of uncertainty into options for policy makers in the context of negotiating climate change. The deadline for the submission of short papers is 15 Jul 2010. More.

The Second International Conference on Social Informatics 25–27 Oct
Papers are being called for the Second International Conference on Social Informatics to be held at IIASA headquarters in Laxenburg, Austria. The conference, organized by the Polish Japanese Institute of Information Technology and IIASA, will bring specialists from the social sciences and informatics community together to share knowledge and improve understanding of the role that each discipline plays in the analysis of social phenomena, such as political or market analysis. Point of view – Vernissage at IIASA
Approximately 200 visitors and IIASA staff members attended the opening of an art exhibition at the Schloss Laxenburg Kaisergang on 8 Apr. Organized by IIASA and supported by the Laxenburg Council, the event is an opportunity to showcase local talent while opening the Schloss to the community. The current exhibition, on display until 30 May, hosts the works of seven Austrian artists. More info and future events contact Aviott John.
