Short biography:
Dr. Kirit S. Parikh is a Member of the Planning Commission,
Government of India, in charge of Energy, Water and Perspective Planning.
With a Doctor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Master's Degree in
Economics from MIT, USA and an M Tech from IIT (Kharagpur), he has been
a Professor of Economics since 1967.
He is a Member of the Energy Coordination Committee and the Committee
on Infrastructure Chaired by the Prime Minister.
He was a Member of the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) of five Prime
Ministers of India.
He is the Chairman of the Indian National Committee, NMO Committee, for IIASA.
From 1980 to 1986 he led IIASA’s Food and Agricultural Program (FAP) involving
more than 100 researchers which explored policies to end hunger in the world.
He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India and honorary life member
of the International Association of Agricultural Economists. He had been
president of The Indian Econometric Society and Gujarat Economic Association.
He is on the governing board of many development research Institutes and Chairman
of some of them. He is also Chairman, Integrated Research and Action for
Development (IRADe), New Delhi.
From 1986 to 2000 he was Founder Director (Vice Chancellor) of Indira Gandhi
Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai – an advanced research
Institute. In 1997-98, on sabbatical leave, he was Special Economic Adviser to
the Administrator UNDP, New York. From 1967-80, he was Professor of Economics
(and sometimes Head) of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), New Delhi.
Besides publishing numerous articles, he has authored, co-authored
and edited 25 books in the areas of planning, water resource management,
appropriate technology for housing, optimum requirement for fertilizers,
energy systems and policy, national and international food policies,
trade policies, general equilibrium modeling, environmental governance
and natural resources accounting.
