Short biography: On 8 July 2004, Federal President Dr. Heinz Fischer was inaugurated before the Federal Assembly in the old assembly hall of the Reichsrat (Reichsrats-sitzungssaal) located in the Parliament building. “I may be right and you may be right, but we both have a duty to try to get closer to the truth.” This slightly altered quotation from Sir Karl Popper is an apt description of Federal President Heinz Fischer’s philosophy of life. In all of the political positions he has held in his life, including at present, he has always striven to show tolerance for other opinions and a willingness to discuss them in order to build consensus, though never at the cost of giving up well-established principles and the search for truth in the process. These pages contain information concerning Dr. Heinz Fischer’s priorities and career as well as his curriculum vitae. (© 2007 The Federal President of the Republic of Austria)
