Education: B.Sc (Hons) Wood Science, (University of Wales (UK)); M.Sc Forestry (same University); Postgraduate certificate in Land Husbandry (Land Husbandry Training Centre, Zomba, Malawi).

CAREER

A. FAO, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia:

03/2007-present: Coordinator, Sub-regional Office for Eastern Africa and FAO Representative to Ethiopia, African Union and UN Economic Commission for Africa: setting up a new technical service centre for Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda. Manage FAO’s Ethiopia programme.

B. FAO, Rome, Italy:

2004-present:  Director, Policy Assistance Division, Technical Co-operation Department: Reporting to Assistant Director General (Technical Cooperation), responsible for technically and administratively leading the activities of a largely decentralised team of Policy Assistance professionals in Africa, Asia - Pacific, Europe, Latin America and Caribbean, and selected countries;
2002–2003: Chief, Policy Co-ordinating Service, and FAO Focal Point for the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD);
1992-98: Senior Forestry Officer - head of planning and statistics branch + UN system forestry focal point for UNCED (Rio Earth Summit);  
1980-92: Professional Officer - successively in programming; field project operations; policy and planning;

C. FAO, Uganda:

1998-99: FAO Representative in Uganda

D. Bogor, Indonesia:

1999-2001: Deputy Director-General - Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR): (a member centre of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research);

E. Malawi:

1982-82: Imperial Group (a British multinational), (Blantyre, Malawi) - manager of plywood mill;
1976-1982: Malawi Government: successively Manager, Blantyre Sawmill; Senior Wood Energy Project Officer;  Forest Industries Planning Officer; and Forestry Research Officer / part-time forestry college lecturer;
1981-81: UN Economic Commission for Africa (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) -associate regional forest industries adviser.
