DieckmannBrian O’Neill is the Leader of the Population and Climate Change (PCC) Program and a co-Leader of the Greenhouse Gas Initiative. He holds a Ph.D. in Earth Systems Science and an M.S. in Applied Science, both from New York University.

He has worked as a member of the science staff of the Environmental Defense Fund in New York, and as an Assistant and Associate Professor (Research) at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies (an appointment he still holds). He first came to IIASA in 1996 as part of the Young Scientists Summer Program and returned full time in 2002. In 2004, he received a European Young Investigator (EURYI) award which provides principal funding for the PCC Program.

His research interests are in population-environment interactions and the science and policy of global climate change, and he has published in a variety of journals, including Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science – USA, and Population and Development Review. He served as a lead author for both the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Fourth Assessment Report, in a volume on impacts, adaptation and vulnerability.
