Professor Sten Nilsson joined the Biosphere Project of IIASA in January 1986 and became Leader of the Forestry Program in 1990. From May to December 2008, he was Acting Director of IIASA having been Deputy Director between July 2002 to May 2008, and Counselor to the Director between 1998-2002.
Before joining IIASA, Professor Nilsson was Leader of the Institute of Forest Industry Market Studies and Professor in Economic Planning at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. During 1983-84, Professor Nilsson was appointed by the Canadian Government to set up new strategies for the forest sector in Canada. In 1985 he headed two commissions for the Swedish government concerning intensified research in the forest sector in Sweden.
A native of Sweden, Professor Nilsson has had a distinguished academic career in forest sector analysis with emphasis on policy analysis. He received his MSc in forestry from the Royal College of Forestry in Stockholm in 1971 and his PhD in economic planning from the same college in 1975. In 1976, he became Professor in economic planning at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. He is a working member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry as well as of the Scientific Committee of Academia Istropolitana, Slovakia; an Academician of the International Academy of Informatics, Russia; and more recently, Foreign Member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.
Professor Nilsson has authored and co-authored over 300 scientific publications. In 2004 he produced a mock Governmental Bill entitled Shared Responsibility: Sweden's Policy for Forest sector Development. An expert on boreal forests and global forest sector analysis, Professor Nilsson is frequently asked to address international meetings on different issues dealing with the forest sector. He has held a number of consultancies in organizations such as The World Bank, FAO, OECD, EC and SIDA. He has served as an expert in different international organizations such as the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development (WCFSD), International Boreal Forest Research Association (IBFRA), International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), Ministerial conference on the protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE), WWF and Forest Trends. In 2001, he was asked to lead a IUFRO Task Force on Information Technology and the Forest Sector and is coeditor of the resulting report which was published in 2005 in IUFRO's World Series.
Since the early 1990s, Professor Nilsson has contributed to the reports published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which, together with Al Gore, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
