Project Description
The reform of social security systems in an aging world and a globally
linked economy has been one of today’s core social and economic issues,
and it is likely to remain at the center of the political agenda for years
to come. IIASA’s Social Security Reform (SSR) Project has been a multi-disciplinary
effort to address problems associated with pensions, retirement, and health
care financing policies.
Objectives
The objective of the SSR Project has been to improve policymaking in this
area by deepening the research base. In pursuing this objective, the SSR
Project has distinguished itself by its global focus (i.e., focus on the
world as a whole rather than individual countries) and multidisciplinary
approach. Specifically, the SSR Project has had the following long-term
goals:
- to produce a comprehensive model-based assessment,
including uncertainty analysis, of the implications of population aging
and globalization for the macroeconomy in general and social security
systems in particular, and
- to contribute to the policy dialogue on social
security and health sector reform.
Future Directions
IIASA is currently undergoing a major restructuring. The Social Security
Reform Project, which is now finishing a successful first phase with the
publication next year of a major study on the impacts of population aging
in Japan, will merge with the Risk, Modeling
and Society (RMS) Project.
