Average life expectancy at birth in 2000 and increase in life expectancy between 1990 - 2000 by province (in years)  [sorted]

Source: China Statistical Yearbook, 2003, Table 4-17, p. 118
Note: Data are from the 2000 Population Census, adjusted by the Annual Sample Surveys on Population Changes since 1990.
Please note that the scale on the left side was cut at age 60. The scale for the changes in life expectancy (figure on the right) is not equivalent to the scale measuring life expectancy in 2000 (figure on the left).
The greatest gain in life expectancy between 1990 and 2000 was reported from Qinghai, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Sichuan, Xinjiang, and Tibet, were it increased by between 4.7 and 5.5 years. Gansu province had the smallest gain in life expectancy at birth. Only minor increase was also reported from Yunnan, Guizhou and Henan.
It is interesting that there is very little correlation between the level of life expectancy at birth and the increase of life expectancy between 1990 and 2000. Tibet, for instance, has the lowest life expectancy of all Chinese provinces, but it had a high increase of 4.7 years between 1990 and 2000. On the other hand, the province of Jilin also reported a high increase in life expectancy of more than 5 years; but it has a high level of average life expectancy of more than 73 years. Moreover, we can find provinces with very low increase in average life expectancy among provinces with high life expectancy in 2000 (Guangdong) and low life expectancy (Gansu).
