If we take into account the number of people in each province the ranking of provinces in successful patent applications looks quite different: Now, Beijing and Shanghai are leading in successful patent applications per 100,000 of the population. Guangdong, which has by far the largest absolute number of successful patent applications, ranks only third in the number of successful applications per 100,000 of the population.
