Number of patent applications per 100.000 of population, 2002
Source: China Statistical Yearbook, 2003, Table 20-56, p.769.
When we calculate patent applications per 100,000 of the population, Shanghai and Beijing are by far leading all other regions of China. There are more than twice as many patent applications per 100,000 of the population in Shanghai as in Guangdong - the province with the third largest number of applications. This clearly indicates the high concentration of research and development capacities in Beijing and Shanghai.
