Patent applications are an indicator of innovative strength. In absolute numbers, Guangdong province is by far leading all other regions of China. There are almost twice as many patent applications in Guangdong than in Shanghai - the province with the second largest number of applications. Due to its concentration of research centers, Beijing has the largest number of patent applications for inventions.
