Can I use a single variable to produce a thematic map?

Yes, you can produce maps both for single variables and each of the indices.

For a single variable you would produce a map in the same way as for an index. Essentially, the mapping of a single variable is equivalent to the mapping of a one-variable index. Of course, in many cases, you would use the map visualization as a tool to decide, whether the variable would be interesting to be included in an index. With a few clicks of you mouse you can see the spatial distribution in the values of more than 300 included variables.
