Map Polygons

We gratefully acknowledge that the maps in the RAPS-China tool are based on polygon data provided by the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing. The author hereby expresses his special thanks to Prof. Xiubin Li, Deputy Head of IGSNRR and Dr. Zhang Ming, Associate Professor of the Institute.

For this application the Chinese polygon data were edited (simplified) and optimized for a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels and for a 600 dpi print resolution (inkjet or laser printer). Then they were saved in device-independent bitmap files (*.bmp), which are subsequently used to produce the thematic maps. While this procedure restricts the scaling of the maps, it speeds up the screen display of the thematic maps.

In a later version of RAPS we might (in addition) use the original polygon maps - at least for printing.
