According to FAO estimates, the total food calorie supply in China increased
from 1,642 to 2,844 kcal per person per day. Most of this increase in food energy came
from a much higher supply of animal products (especially meat) and wheat products. In 1961
wheat and wheat products contributed only 10% of the total calorie supply - in 1996 it was
more than 20%. The increase in meat supply was even bigger. While meat and other animal
products contributed only about 3% to the average diet in the early 1960s, they provided
more than 17% of the calories in the mid-1990s.
