The fifth annual IIASA-DPRI meeting on Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM): Innovations in Science and Policy took place at the International Academic Exchange Center of the Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China, 14-18 September 2005. This Forum was organized by the Beijing Normal University (BNU), the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of the Kyoto University, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria, as well as the National Disaster Reduction Center, Ministry of Civil Affairs of China (NDRCC).

This forum built on the network of researchers and practitioners from earlier meetings:

Particular emphasis was on research and experience that promote innovations in science and policy in three main risk areas:

  • natural disasters
  • infectious diseases
  • technological accidents.

Panels and sessions were held on the following topics:

  • Post-Kobe rationale for Integrated Disaster Risk Management;
  • Importance of Integrated Risk Management in a Complex, Global World;
  • Case Studies Demonstrating the Importance of Integrated Disaster Risk Management (Failures and Successes);
  • Disaster Risk and Governance;
  • Implementation of Innovative Science and Policy for IDRM;
  • IDRiM Methodology, Models and Tools.

A special session for young scientists was scheduled on September 17. On September 18, a Round Table Discussion on the NEXUS-IDRiM Initiative, which is a network of researchers and practitioners dedicated to implementing IDRiM, was held.

The organizers of this annual meeting were Peijun Shi (BNU), Norio Okada (DPRI), Joanne Linnerooth-Bayer and Aniello Amendola (IIASA).
