Integrated Disaster Risk Management:
Challenges of Implementation

CUEBC, Ravello, Italy
3-7 July 2004

The fourth annual meeting on Integrated Disaster Risk Management took place in Ravello, Italy, July 3-7, 2004. This Forum was organized by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria, and the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of the Kyoto University, and was hosted by the Centro Universitario Europeo per I Beni Culturali (CUEBC), a University Center for the Safeguard of Cultural Heritage. The focus of this year's Forum was Challenges of Implementation.

This forum built on the network of researchers and practitioners from earlier meetings:

At Ravello, a particular emphasis was on research that promotes the implementation of equitable and efficient strategies for risk mitigation, what might be thought of as "implementation science". In keeping with the implementation theme, panels and sessions were held on the following pressing topics:

  • Implementing Response Strategies in an Era of Improved Seismic Hazard Assessment;
  • The Protection of Vital Infrastructure: The Case of Health Facilities;
  • School as the Key Component of Disaster Reduction;
  • Coping with Floods in Developing and Transition Countries;
  • Coping with Droughts in Developing Countries;
  • The Mediterranean Cooperation.

In addition, presentations by young scientists were given on July 4.
