Jason J Blackstock, a physicist and international relations scholar, is a Research Scholar in the Risk and Vulnerabilities (RAV) program at IIASA. Jason’s research focuses on evaluating the scientific (climatic), political and economic implications of climate engineering (a.k.a. geoengineering) concepts. Such concepts aim to counteract the negative climatic changes caused by green house gasses by intentionally modifying other parameters of the climate system. This research will particularly include developing frameworks for evaluating the scientific and international-political uncertainty and risks associated with such concepts.

Jason received in PhD in Physics from the University of Alberta (2005), along with his Masters of Public Administration from Harvard (2008) where he was also Researcher at the Belfer Center for Science and Technology immediately prior to arriving at IIASA. He previously received his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Queen’s University in Canada (2000) and his Master of Physics from the University of Edinburgh (2001). Jason holds his Professional Physicst (PPhys) designation from the Canadian Association of Physicist, and from 2003-2007 he worked as a Research Associate with Hewlett Packard Laboratories in Silicon Valley developing nanoscale electronic and sensor technologies.
