Aniello Amendola received his Doctor Degree in electrical engineering in 1962 from the Federico II University of Naples, Italy. He was involved with the design of memory systems for computers at Olivetti, joined the Fast Breeder Project at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (Germany) in 1967 and at ENEA Bologna (Italy) in 1972. In 1978 he joined the JRC at Ispra (Italy), where is has been Head of the Major Technological Risk Sector, involved with projects on risk assessment of nuclear power reactors and chemical installations. Furthermore he has promoted various activities in support of the policy of the European Commission for controlling risk (process plants, genetically mutated organisms, civil protection), and in particular the creation of the Major Accident Hazards Bureau at Ispra. From 1997 he joined the IIASA Risk, Modelling, and Society in a cooperation frame with JRC and since 2001 with the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of the Kyoto University, Japan, where he was visiting professor in 2001.
Dr. Amendola has coordinated a number of international comparative projects on risk and reliability assessment of Nuclear Power Stations and chemicals plants, has given and coordinated courses on risk and reliability assessment in a number of universities in Europe, which resulted in published books on the subject. His major publications concern reliability of reactor thermal design, reliability of dynamic systems and man-machine interaction, critical review of risk assessment procedures, regulatory aspects of the control of major accident hazards in the European Union and Integrated Disaster Risk Management
