Version 1.0, Feb. 2001

The research project "Evaluating Alternative Paths for Sustainable Development in Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia" with the short name "PDE Project" was conducted at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Research and Consultancy Centre (MRCC) of the University of Namibia (UNAM), the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning in Botswana, and the National Institute of Statistics (INE) in Mozambique.

The project was funded by the European Commission, DG VIII - Directorate General for Development (A Comissão Europea, Direcção-Geral do Desenvolvimento) (Contract No. B7-6200/96-18/VIII/ENV).

The IIASA team wishes to thank the European Commission (DG Development), all colleagues and friends at IIASA, the University of Namibia, the Ministries of Finance and Development Planning in Botswana and Mozambique, the University of Botswana, the National Institute of Statistics and the Ministry of Environmental Coordination Action in Mozambique.

This project could not have succeeded without the kindness and support of Mr. Ben Fuller, Mr. Manuel da Costa Gaspar, Mr. Lazarus Hangula, Ms. Alissa Holt, Ms. Maimuna Ibraimo, Ms. Patricia Kandelaars, Ms. Anneline Pick, Mr. Rebasele R.K. Radibe, Mr. Emídio Sebastião, Ms. Riikka Shemeikka, Mr. Kenneth Strzepek, Mr. David Yates, and Mr. Hassan Musa Yousif. We owe them all a debt of gratitude.

We give special thanks to Kuberin Packirisamy, who, despite personal tragedy, did a brilliant job of programming the core of the Botswana, Namibia, and Mozambique Demographic Models. This project would not have been the same without his untiring work.

IIASA scientists made short- and long-term visits to Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique for project presentations, discussions, and data collection. We would like to thank all those who helped us there, even though they are too numerous to name.

Finally, we are grateful to Ms. Isolde Prommer for her unfailing dedication to this Web site/CD-ROM, and to Ms. Marilyn Brandl for secretarial assistance.
