International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)Population Project, IIASA
People & Contacts: Network

This page provides e-mail contacts and institute associations of many of the persons who were involved in this project.

In 1997 and 1998 two workshops took place at IIASA. Participants with different professional backgrounds and experiences came from Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, European countries and the USA. The workshops were used to gather information, disseminate tentative research findings, and for follow up activities.

Each summer, IIASA hosts the Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP). Over the past four years (1997-2000) students who participated in the Population Project provided useful background papers, analysis and modeling support.

Researchers, scientists and students from several countries wrote papers on population, development and environmental issues in the project countries. These papers have helped to improve the quality of the PDE models. A selection of these papers was published as an IIASA Interim Report, edited by Ben Fuller and Isolde Prommer, entitled Population, Development, Environment in Namibia. Background Readings. A similar selection of papers on Mozambique, entitled Population, Development, Environment in Mozambique. Background Readings, edited by Manuel da Costa Gaspar, is forthcoming.

These papers will be used as background material for the forthcoming books, tentatively titled AIDS, Diamonds and Water: Modeling Population and Sustainable Development in Namibia and Botswana, edited by W.C. Sanderson et al., and Mozambique. The Troubled Green Giant, edited by A. Wils and M. da Costa Gaspar.

In January 1999, IIASA organized a two-week "Training Course on Systems-Modeling of Population-Development-Environment Interactions" at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. More information about this workshop is at the Modeling Workshop link.
