Professor Tjalling Koopmans and Professor Leonid Kantorovich jointly won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1975 for their contributions to the theory of optimum allocation of resources.
They both joined IIASA in the 1970s to work with Professor George Dantzig, winner to the U.S. National Medal of Science, to expand IIASA’s study of advanced systems science and methodology.
Professor Koopmans continued to exert an important influence on the Institute until his death in 1985. In his honor a distinguished lecture series was established to attract world-renown scientists to give lectures at IIASA. The Koopmans special lecture series was inaugurated by Professor Kenneth Arrow of Stanford University, also a Nobel Prize winner, in 1994.
