Note:

This map was developed by the ERD project. We used the CISCO polygons and population data from the REGIO database of EUROSTAT, as well as data from the most recent statistical yearbooks. This map includes 440 areas (NUTS 3 level, equivalent to German "Kreise" and "Kreisfreie Städte)).

This map displays the percentage of elderly (age 65+) in Germany's population. Because of the strong population aging in Germany, as indicated by the low number of children, one would expect very high percentages of elderly, especially in Eastern Germany. However, the percentages are actually quite low as compared to Western Germany. This can be explained by the fact that the demographic trend of low fertility is relatively new in Eastern Germany. There are large cohorts between age 25 and 40 from the "baby boom" generation, which currently lead to relatively low percentages of elderly, despite population aging. But the proportion of elderly will rise dramatically in the future, when the large "baby boom" cohorts come into retirement age.
