Online Databases |
| Introduction |
|
| This is the Database
Web Site of IIASA's European Rural Development (ERD) Project.
During the next few months this site will evolve into a large
on-line repository of numerical information on Europe's countryside. The database will
provide Europe-wide background information on rural
development in the form of tables, charts, maps, remote sensing
images, and data-generated
animations (see an example
from the ChinaFood CD-ROM). It will include both statistical and
bio-geophysical data and will be available to all collaborators of
the ERD project. The database will be similar in structure to the
data collection we have developed for the ChinaFood CD-ROM (see example). |
| In the development of the
ERD database we will apply three principles: |
 |
First, we will select
only those data, which we consider highly relevant for understanding
the driving forces of rural development in Europe (according to our
theoretical concept). |
 |
Second, we will convert
the numerical information in such a form that the main message can
be understood by everyone (and not just by technically advanced
specialists of one particular field). This means, that we will try
to visualize most of the data or at least, re-arrange
it into meaningful tables. In this way, we also hope to make the
numerical information attractive to political decision makers and
planners. |
 |
Finally, the database will
also provide direct access to original datasets, which
we will collect ourselves or produce through GIS-analyses or models
in the course of our ERD work. |
